Reflectarray Design Using a Discrete Dipole Framework

We propose and numerically validate a patch reflectarray modeling approach suitable for small patches that describes each as pair of polarizable magnetic dipoles. introduce an extraction technique to obtain the effective polarizability dipoles via full-wave simulations on individual patches, followed by beamforming design routine valid under weakly scattering configurations. This dipole framework serves alternative ray tracing model often used in designs, which rays are drawn from feed point scattered off elements. Whereas method solves problem terms phase delays, presented here has potential accurately predict beam patterns using fully dipolar treatment empirically characterized patches. illustrate this applying it two modulation strategies: variable size can be continuously tuned (grayscale response), fixed (binary response) on/off is achieved through selective electrical shorting. Methods incorporating these cases into discussed results compared those full wave simulation.
